How to make stickers

There are three ways to make your own stickers: print and cut them by hand, print and cut with a machine, or design them yourself and have a printer make them. All three start with the same file. Here is how each one works, and the one printing concept that trips most people up.

1. Design the sticker

Open the sticker maker, start from a template, and change the words, colours and shape. For a photo of a pet or product, use photo to sticker; with no artwork at all, the AI sticker generator draws some for you. Download a 300 DPI PNG. That resolution is what printers expect, and it is the default.

Three rules before you print anything:

  • Size it for real life. Check the sticker sizes guide: 3 inches for laptops, 2 inches for packaging seals, 3.5 × 2.25 inches for name tags.
  • Keep text large. Anything under about 8 pt (roughly 1/9 inch tall) turns to mush on a small sticker.
  • Mind the edge. This is the one that catches everyone out. Try it below.

A cutter, whether that’s you with scissors, a Cricut or an industrial die, never hits the line exactly. That is why print shops ask for bleed (colour that extends about 1/16 inch past the cut) and a safe zone (keeping words about 1/8 inch inside it). 2a. Make stickers at home, by hand

  1. Print a test on plain paper at 100% scale and measure one sticker with a ruler.
  2. Load sticker paper: matte or glossy paper for indoor use, printable vinyl for anything that meets water. The sticker paper guide compares them.
  3. Print at the best quality with the paper type set as the pack recommends. Let vinyl dry for at least an hour.
  4. Laminate with a clear self-adhesive overlay if the sticker will be handled, washed or used outdoors.
  5. Cut: scissors or a craft knife on a cutting mat, leaving the white border. A circle punch makes perfect round stickers fast.

2b. Make stickers with a Cricut or Silhouette

Cutting machines use Print Then Cut: you print the design with registration marks on your home printer, and the machine’s sensor reads the marks and cuts around each sticker. 2c. Order them from a printer

For more than about 50 of one design, or stickers that must survive sun and rain for years, upload your 300 DPI PNG to an online sticker printer. They print on outdoor vinyl with UV-resistant inks and a laminate, and cut with steel dies or plotters. Download with bleed switched on, or send a die-cut design with its white border, and include the “PNG with cut line” file if the printer asks for a cut path.

How to make vinyl stickers vs vinyl decals

“Vinyl sticker” usually means a printed sticker on waterproof vinyl. A vinyl decal is different: it is cut from solid-coloured vinyl with no background and applied with transfer tape, so only the letters remain on the car, wall or tumbler. Decals need a cutting machine; printed vinyl stickers do not.
