The same design can last a week or five years depending on what it is printed on. Here is what each sticker material is good for, and what to avoid.

Matte or glossy?
Glossy makes colours pop and suits photo stickers. Matte is easier to write on (name tags, labels you date by hand), shows fingerprints less, and does not reflect light into a Cricut’s sensor. If you want gloss and durability, print on matte vinyl and add a glossy laminate.
Inkjet vs laser
Most printable vinyl is made for inkjet printers. Laser printers need paper labelled laser-safe, because the fuser gets hot enough to warp inkjet coatings. Among inkjets, pigment inks resist water and sunlight better than dye inks.
Laminate: the cheap upgrade
A clear self-adhesive laminate sheet over a printed sticker keeps ink from smudging, adds scratch resistance and slows UV fading. It is the difference between a bottle sticker that lasts days and one that lasts months. Apply it before cutting so the edges are sealed together.
Holographic and clear stickers
Holographic stickers are usually printed vinyl with a holographic laminate on top; the rainbow shows through light and white areas of the design. Home printers cannot print white ink, so on clear vinyl any white in your design will be see-through. Choose darker, saturated colours for clear stickers, or add a white vinyl layer behind them.

What is the best sticker paper for home printing?
For indoor stickers, matte full-sheet sticker paper is the easiest to print and cut and works with Cricut sensors. For water bottles and anything handled a lot, use waterproof printable vinyl and add a clear laminate.
Is sticker paper waterproof?
Standard paper-based sticker paper is not. Printable vinyl is water-resistant, and becomes properly waterproof once covered with a clear laminate. Inkjet ink on unlaminated vinyl can still smudge when wet.
Can I use inkjet sticker paper in a laser printer?
No. Laser printers heat the page to fuse toner, which can melt inkjet vinyl coatings and damage the printer. Buy paper marked as laser-compatible.
How do I make holographic stickers at home?
Print on clear or white vinyl and apply a holographic laminate over the top, or print directly onto holographic printable vinyl. Designs with white or light areas show the rainbow effect best.
